The history of women in real estate is a story of resilience, determination, and progress. From facing gender restrictions to achieving equal opportunities, women have played a significant role in shaping the real estate industry throughout the years.

 

In 1910, Seattle broker Corrine Simpson made history by becoming the first woman to join the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). This milestone marked the beginning of a journey towards greater gender inclusivity in the real estate profession.

 

The 1920s saw Cora Wright, a trailblazer and one of the founders of the Women's Council of REALTORS® (WCR), facing gender-based barriers when she was initially denied membership in the Chicago Real Estate Board. Despite this obstacle, she joined the neighboring Oak Park Real Estate Board and subsequently became a member of NAR. Over time, gender restrictions at local boards began to diminish, paving the way for greater participation of women in the real estate industry.

 

It wasn't until 1950 that women were officially allowed to join the NAR, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards gender equality within the association. This pivotal moment, 67 years after the association's formation, represented a turning point for women in real estate.

 

The year 1974 brought a monumental shift with the addition of sex to the list of federal protected classes under the Fair Housing Act. This crucial legislation made it illegal to discriminate in housing, granting women the fair opportunity to apply for mortgages and access housing without facing gender-based discrimination.

 

In 2001, another significant advancement occurred with the addition of gender identity to the list of federal protected classes. This further reinforced the commitment to equality and non-discrimination within the real estate industry.

 

The evolution of women in real estate is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of countless individuals who have worked tirelessly to break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment. Today, women continue to make significant contributions to the real estate profession, shaping its future and driving positive change within the industry.
